"All-weather" wicker is a term applied to the manmade polymer resin material (usually polyethylene plastic) which is often used for furniture, baskets, storage containers, and décor. As compared to natural rattan or wicker materials, all-weather or resin wicker is a far more water- and humidity-resistant choice than traditional plant-fiber furniture. Resin wicker products tend to be priced more competitively than comparable natural fiber items since synthetic wicker's consistent size and shape minimizes manufacturing issues.
Typically woven on a lightweight metal frame, resin wicker furniture is easy to move around or to store out of season. As with all materials used outdoors, exposure to the elements (particularly freezing temperatures and sun exposure) will affect the practical lifespan of resin wicker.
We all know that protecting our skin from sun exposure reduces premature aging. The same goes for your furniture!
-
Choose a location to place your furniture that is protected from direct sun. All plastics are to some degree susceptible to UV degradation. Cover your furniture with a durable dust cover to prevent premature fading and weathering. Understand that resin wicker will last longer when protected from excessive sun exposure.
-
Store your furniture when seasonally out of use, especially during periods of extreme temperatures. Be especially careful when handling resin wicker in the winter, as the polymer can become brittle in freezing temperatures. Sudden dramatic temperature changes can cause wicker material to expand or contract quickly, which can lead to cracking or unraveling over multiple cycles.
-
Resin wicker is designed to be a low-maintenance material. We don't recommend using a sealant, wax, or conditioner to preserve the finish of resin wicker furniture. Some chemicals can affect the integrity and durability of resin wicker. A gentle detergent such as diluted dish soap is a good choice for cleaning when necessary.
-
Water exposure is unlikely to damage resin wicker (with the possible exception of freezing environments), but keeping your furniture clean and dry will prevent surface mildew and mold from developing, and will protect cushions used on the furniture.
Under similar conditions, resin wicker will typically last longer in an outdoor application than natural wicker. Depending on care and environment, the expected lifespan of resin wicker furniture available at economical price-points often falls in the range of 2-5 years. High-end luxury-brand pieces using premium resin wickers may last upwards of 10 years with excellent care.
